First time here and first time gardening

Hi There, I have only started on my garden and I have never attempted gardening at all. So far I have planted a few bulbs for the spring in a flower bed But I put the compost straight onto the grass, I think I should have put something down over the grass to prevent it coming through or will it be ok? Ive planted basil, bayleaf and rosemary in a pot outside will these need protection in the winter should I put them in the shed when the frost comes along? I was thinking of doing some winter lettuce, strawberries and maybe carrots is this a bit premature for a first timer. Can evergreens be planted anytime Im thinking of putting some along the fence is there a recommended variety? Sorry for all the questions Embarassed

Hello and welcome, to help you with your questions you should maybe consider posting them in the individulal fourms i.e. there's a fruit and veg fourm and another one for bulbs etc With regard to the herbs, I have Bay and rosemary planted permanently outside and they are fine, I don't think the basil will survive though, I think it's an annual.
