There are about 8 mature trees in out back garden that have IVY all the way up the main trunk and onto larger branches. I've heard and read different adviceon getting rid of it.
I was about to cut all the ivy at about waist height and let it decay before removing it. Is there any reason I should not do this? |

| Waist height or even lower would be grand. Just be careful not to damage the bark of the tree in the process of cutting. Also only the ivy above the cut will die, so if you need to kill the lower section you will have to paint on brushwood killer or else dig out the root. |

Wild life conservation!
I can't remember off the top of my head how many species of insects ivy supports, or how many birds nest and take shelter in bad weather among it, but there are a lot.
Could you maybe only cut some of it, so those habitats aren't completely destroyed?
