Hello
I planted some 1-2 m high Grislinia hedging last October and, of the 20 plants, 10 are in the shade and 10 in brighter light. Then ten that are in the shade are ok. The other ten have black rolled-up tips to their leaves. It is as though the tips have been burned by heat and the leaf tip has become black and brittle. I cannot think that the sun has been strong enough this time of year .. so I can only conclude that I have a problem.
Can you help? _________________ Bish |

Hi Bishee
Are the griselinia that are in the sun also in a more windy ,open spot? You might find that they have had wind or frost damage.
I knew somone locally to us who planted 200 variegated griselinia plants around their garden. The sheep nibbled the shrubs (costing 10 euro each with labour) . All of the plants died except about four that were out of reach to the sheep. We were thinking that there must have been something in the animals saliva which killed the plants.
Is there any new growth coming on them now we have warmer weather?
Cheers

Was at a freind house this eve and noticed his grisselena hedge which is years old had what appeared to be tiny new growth leaves which were all black, don't if it is wind or frost damage or whether this is normal
Set about 70 rooted ones myself last october in a pretty exposed site, about 65 have survived and still have leaves, going to pinch out the growing tips tomorrow as they are pretty scraggly looking, had a few left over and planted these in buckets so have a few spares to fill in the gaps. Don't know if i'm doing the right thing or not _________________ AJ |

Thanks ..
looks as though this still needs answering. I planted Griselinia because they are particularly tolerant to lots of wind .. and, in any case, I have now had frost for weeks. The damage was only noticed recently ... that;s not to sya, of course, that it wasn't damaged earlier ...

If they were all bought together then the ten affected with black tips are caused by their planting environment.

Typical frost damage.

Yes.

Yes.
Plant Griselinia away from frost pockets.
Frost pockets are usually areas of ground lower than or shadier than their surroundings, these receive lower temperatures and frost often lingers long enough to damage the spring leaves and flower buds.
I suggest you look at planting a laurel hedge in this shady area. _________________ If you benefited from irishgardeners.com, please link to us or tell others, so that the site can grow and benefit more gardeners.

Thanks for this .... except I have had no frost for several weeks ... and I prefer the softer, lighter leaves of the Griselinia. So - you're sure that this is no leaf bug or spore problem? _________________ Bish |

Spores that can count to ten.
Have you inspected the leaves for pests, any trace?
Have you inspected the soil for root pests (vine weevil), any trace?
Was there an old hedge or plant/trees removed from the site with the blackened Griselinia. Traces of honey fungus disease in that soil strip perhaps?
Check for creamy white threads in the soil and a mushroomy smell.
Time for you to post some pictures if you have any of the affected plants plus the affected and non-affected areas, so that we can help you more.
I still reckon frost/biting wind damage.
Are the blackened edges of the leaves slightly crisp. _________________ If you benefited from irishgardeners.com, please link to us or tell others, so that the site can grow and benefit more gardeners.

Hi
The black tips are cripy - like potato crisps. They disintegrate easily, with little pressure.
I have no idea how to post images - though I can see an Img icon on the messagy body bar above what I am typing. When I press the Img button, it inserts an Img leader into the message body but I don't know how to link my image to it.[/img] _________________ Bish |

If you press the img button once, then post the image address, then press image again, that should add your image.

| Thats the thing with Griselinia it is tender to frost or icy winds, but if you live near the sea (southampton) the damage will usually be minimal, just restricted to the new leaves. A hard frost can kill stems, now that is trouble but rare. bishee, I suggest you feed your hedge with sulphate of potash in autumn to toughen the stems against frost damage. |
