Plants that grow along the ground, say a foot wide?

Hello All

I am looking for some ideas. I am looking for a plant that grows along the ground, say a foot wide, but to grow right down the garden. It needs to be low maintanence.

Any ideas, please pass them on?

Many heathers will do this as well as varieties of thyme. But how is the area for sun/shade and what is the soil type like.

Armeria known as sea thrift could also be used. But again it is dependant on full sun. Do you have that Larry?

Larry my Mum has this beautiful seaside daisy (Erigeron glaucus)in her garden.

It is a brilliant ground cover and flowers profusely almost all year round. Lovely lilac daisies with yellow centers. Its an excellent coastal plant too. People constantly stop and ask for cuttings!

Hi Larry,
Erigeron was the one that sprang to mind before reading your replies. It is in most garden centres and it is very underrated plant. It dosen't look much in a pot but when it spreads and flowers it is really eye catching . I have it growing here in Donegal beside a contrast plant Anthemis ( puncata cupaniana ) which has silvery grey foliage and daisy like white flowers which compliment the lilac pink of the Erigeron.
They are both bombproof and a fairly robust hack back of this years faded flowers will ensure renewed growth for the new year. As an added bonus both are evergreen and you can leave the pruning till early spring if you don't like a bare look.
