I thought this was a niffty idea: how to build a home-made self-watering plant pot
http://www.instructables.com/id/Self-watering-recycled-plant-pot-for-growing-herbs/
I've built a few (from Lidl 1.5 lt fizzy water bottles) and they've been pretty successful. The capacity is small so they're really only good for germinating and for shallow-rooted plants (I'm trying rocket in one at the moment)
The Instructables website has some ideas for larger-scale versions of the same idea, which could be a great idea for container veggies. I might give those a go next year.
Of course, all this watering is a bit unnecessary given the current weather! I've spent more time recently tipping excess water out of the resevoir of my self-watering pots than topping them up! |

Nice one, thanks for that. Is it outdoors you have these coolaboola? I might try growing some winter salad veg indoors on window sill with a few of these. Any pics of yours or how your plants in them coped with the Irish summer sun. _________________ ______________________________

| I have them outdoors but you could use them both indoors and outdoors. I have no pics yet but will take some soon and upload them. It will be interesting to see how the newly planted seeds fare (with all this sun!) |
