Hi,
I have about 4 to 5 metres of wall, approx 50 cm high. I want to put a hedge behind it ( at there is a footpath on the otherside of the wall, and I would like to discourage it being a seating area ).
So what I figure was, a box hedge, which would be low and thick, to prevent people sticking bottles etc or siting on the wall.
Suggestions.
The is located is Dublin 15, and is south facing.
Any thoughs appreciated.. |

Hi Cadence and welcome to Irish Gardeners , Box will not stop anyone sitting on a wall . What you need is something like Pyracantha . It will grow in most situations and for a fast growth over 4 to 5 meters use about 4 ( they are 6 or 7 euros each ) and can be got in any garden centre . Do not let them get out of control , train them to grow 3 to 6 inches from the wall cutting twice or three times a year ( 5 minute job ) Wear gloves , the thorns are deadly
Hope this helps

Thorns will surely prevent wall sitters alright.
Its best to leave the hedge "informal" and loose, hanging over the top of the wall.
Go to your garden centre and have a look at Pyracanta, also have a look a the following thorny devils......
Berberis darwinii
Berberis stenophylla
Berberis thunbergii "Atropurpurea"
Ilex (holly, quite slow but native) _________________ If you benefited from irishgardeners.com, please link to us or tell others, so that the site can grow and benefit more gardeners.
