I planted a Stargazer last year. It had pink flowers then. When the lily reappeared this year all the flowers were orange. Why did this happen? Is it a bit like when hydrangea's turning blue in certain soils?

Wow, never heard of that happening before. Are you sure there were not two bulbs in the pot. One (pink) may have died due to rotting in damp soil, the other (orange) then may have had a chance to succeed.

It could be, but a change from pink to orange is very dramatic.
Your Lily 'Stargazer' likes a neutral to acid soil, maybe the soil you planted it into was particularly alkaline (limey).
This may have caused a colour change, but would it have caused as dramatic a change.

For all members wondering about soil PH eg acid, alkaline, sweet, sour etc....
I will be creating a sticky topic on the subject shortly, so stay tuned.
