I am looking for some advice on the following project.
I am going to be planting a large area of land this September/October with daffodil bulbs, they are going to be planted in drifts The soil have been recently excavted and the the original topsoil has been replaced There will be grass seed sown and the eventual look will naturalize over the years with native trees etc. The quality of the topsoil is really good and the site is south facing.
I would most appreciate advice on preparing the soil, sowing, any tips at all, a lot of money and labour is being invested in this project and I want to do it right from the start.

Thank you
Anne McMahon

I hope for your bulbs sake that the soil is not too full of organic matter. Lots of organic matter can cause soil water retention which can cause rotting of bulbs. Digging in lots of sharp sand and grit will prevent this.

The soil that I am going to be working with has not been treated with any organic matter, The area has been taken apart because it need drainage, the top lay of soil was saved, the drains put in and the the top soil was replaced. I hope I am not at an advantage all ready. I suppose it is the quality of the bulbs that matter in the end. lets see, thanks for the post. Cool Anne

Aine . your conditions sound ok to me , heres an old gardeners tip tor sowing bulbs in drifts . Stand with your back to where you want to plant them and throw them over your shoulder , wherever they land thats where to plant . They look more natural than trying to arrange them randomly .
