This clumpy low growing perennial has an ultimate height of 0.6 metres (2ft) and a spread of approx 0.6 metres (2ft).
Quite a few astute gardeners are the proud hosts to the glossy red star-shaped flowers of this late flowering perennial.
Its foliage can best be described as grass-like narrow blades, no surprise then that this plant is a member of the gladioli and Iris family.
If you have enough red in your garden why not try Schizostylis coccinea ‘Mrs Hegarty’ (pink) or “Viscountess Bying (pale pink), there are many other types available but these are the trusted varieties.
“Kaffir Lily” is a great cut flower especially this late in the season, lasting up to ten days if treated correctly.
To enjoy late colour give this perennial a location in full sun in a soil that never totally dries out.
A good companion plants to team with Schizostylis is Sedum “Autumn Joy”, both perennials offering each other complimentary autumn colour.
