We British complain at everything; if it’s not the weather it is the traffic on the road, if not the programmes on the televison, the government. Yet when it comes to the things that really matter we suddenly ‘shut up’ for want of a better phrase. I’m talking about the practice of organic gardening, some of us Britons belong to the minority and speak up about it, a few try it out and the majority ignore it, accepting the chemically-bathed, water-pumped supermarket produce which is so readily available today. For some the idea of actually getting up, going outside and working for their food is a put off straight away but for others it may be the innocence of not knowing what to do, how to do it and when it is meant to be done. Don’t let this put you off. Read books on the subject, there is a diverse collection out there all full of interesting tasks for you to undertake and, after all, gardening has never been and never will be an exact science.
I swiftly move onto my point of writing this: that there are so many benefits of organic gardening. Even the amateur knows organic produce totally and utterly free from chemicals is a whole lot healthier for you due to the natural vitamins and nutrients in the plant which are often lost through spraying with pesticide or herbicide. It has been proven that people who eat organic live a longer happier life. Ask yourself this: Who lives the longest- the butterfly who feeds daily on nectar corrupted with chemicals or the butterfly who feeds on the same flower several miles down the lane, growing in an organic garden free from toxins?
Virginia Worthington, certified nutrition specialist, concluded in organically farmed food there is 27% more vitamin C than in cheap supermarket splodge, 21.1% more iron, 29.3% more magnesium and 13.6% more phosphorus all of which are required for optimum health. With this and the fact that consumers in Italy consume approximately two kilos of chemicals and pesticides from products grown using conventional farming methods, no wonder some people want to switch to organic farming their fruit and vegetables. Who was it that said ‘our children are the future’? Well they were right and it is the growers responsibility to feed the future. And the best way to feed the future is to fee it organically, which requires a vast amount of exercise. So forget the weight training, get lifting those bags of manure; forget the exercise bike and turn those compost heaps a couple of times. All these jobs and more ask for physical strength and stamina which can take rather a stretch of time to obtain. So don’t be capricious about your gardening methods; get out there get stuck in and forget all about the gym or that weight watchers club because all of these things can be found in the garden if you search hard enough. After all organic gardening is fun exercise to be done with nature and not against and surely anything that works with nature is for the better? |
