Hi would like to say a big thank you in advance, on any help from you experts on my favourite subject of Turf. I have just moved and started to lay down the foundations for a 1 brick height edging for my Lawn. Many thanks for any advice on the perfect base for Turf. Some people have said to make sure you have 4 inches of good Top Soil, and other people have told me that mushroom compost is a vary good base. Any advice besides getting the soil tested to start with, would be good. Best regards to all the experts, and thank you for having me as a member. Leslie.

Welcome Les.
Mushroom compost can be quite good as a base for a lawn as long as it is not the sole soil type used for the lawn. It best to combine it with a mineral soil (possibly existing soil) as well. Mushroom compost usually contains a lot of lime, which will be benificial in preventing certain types of moss invading your new lawn. This is because It is made often up of substances like gypsum, and limestone plus horse manure, straw.
Before you go any further I suggest you have a look at these two important posts on
sowing a lawn from seed
and
laying a lawn from turf

Hope you find them helpful.
