Apple tree care

We were given a tree as a present a few years ago, it was very small and didn't know what type of tree it was, so consequently we didn't pay much attention to it's planting or care.
This year, however, it produced a great crop of red skinned, crisp & juicy apples, similar to pink ladies.
Is there anything I could do to hopefully guarantee a similar crop next year e.g. pruning or any other care tips.

i got my niece a miniature apple tree for her first birthday, which has been planted in a half barrel for the last two and a half years, doing well. in the last week, a lot of the leaves have started yellowing; it was fine until then. is there anything obvious which might cause this?

water shortage, drying out is the first thing that comes to mind as my raised veg beds suffered over the last while from lack of water.
